Having spent more than 20 years in the retail automotive industry, I can attest to the accuracy of this study. However, in this day and age, with as much media coverage as there has been and continues to be on the topic of contract fraud and misrepresentation, I believe that the consumer is, at least, equally responsible for the situation.

In ten years of actually contracting vehicle sales, both retail and commercial, I had only one, yes ONE, customer actually read the entire contract, front and back. Working for one of the largest dealers in the Tri-County area of California, that fact still amazes me. The finance associate "goes over" the contract, hands the contract to the customer to read and then asks if the customer has any questions. 9 out of 10 will only ask where to sign. Period. One may want further explanation of a particular aspect (APR, insurance, etc). Who is to blame if the customer doesn't ask questions?

Not a month goes by that a major news station isn't airing special coverage on consumer issues. For years, the focus was the automobile industry, now it seems to be mortgages but, whatever the industry, consumers are exposed to the TRUTH every day. They need only open their eyes and ears and minds. Information is available 24/7. While I ABSOLUTELY agree that there are unscrupulous companies taking advantage of whomever they can out there, there would be fewer victims if people would educate themselves! I applaud your site for offering that education, and refer people to it daily. There are many other sites available, as well... BUYER BEWARE is a TRUTH. At what point do people become responsible for their actions?
